Borgloon, a pleasant town, located in the rolling Haspengouw, once a fortified town from where the counts of Loon ruled over their county, which at its peak equaled the current province of Limburg in size.

The name Borgloon is composed of 'Borg' and 'Loon' which means: 'Fortress in the middle of a wooded hill'. Numerous sights refer to the rich cultural-historical past of our “town of counts”.

CASTLES BETWEEN THE BLOSSOMS

Ten castles watch dominantly on the hilltops or hide in the valleys. Each and every one of them is a jewel that symbolizes a rich past.

FRUIT, PEARLS OF HASPGOW

Hundreds of thousands of fruit trees full of fresh fruit, as far as the eye can see. In Haspengouw, this fairytale scene is part of everyday life. You are therefore in the heart of the fruit region.

CRADLE OF THE SYRUP

The old Borgloon steam syrup factory is one of the last remnants of the industrial processing of fruit into syrup. At the beginning of the last century, Borgloon was the birthplace of syrup production, which gave the residents of Lonen the nickname 'syrup makers'. The factory was founded in 1878, but activity ceased in 1988. Part of the factory, including the entire installation, was classified as a protected monument in 1999. In 2005, the city council of Borgloon purchased the syrup factory to prevent further decay.

In April, the thousands of fruit trees - with the promise of a rich harvest - become gigantic blossom bouquets. Tranquility, space and oxygen, three assets that make Haspengouw the hiking region par excellence. Both nature and city walks lead you past beautiful and unique places. Thanks to the landscape walks of the Regional Landscape Haspengouw and Voeren, you can discover the region in optimal conditions.
